The planned surge of American troops will have tragic consequences for the people of Afghanistan. ++ After eight years of war, the situation on the ground is dismal for the poor, and especially for women. ++ The people are "squashed between two enemies": the US/NATO troops and the warlords of the Taliban, but there is an alternative. ++ Allow the country some peace and the people will fight the internal enemies. ++ Furthermore, in struggling for democracy and human rights, they will be instilled and established with an inherent value.
