Iran from Russia's Perspective

Dmitri Trenin, Carnegie Moscow Center | February 17, 2012

Russia hopes to gain benefits from mediating the Iran dispute. ++ Historically, there has always been conflict between Russia and Iran. ++  Due to this past animosity, the notion of Russia being Iran’s ally sounds strange to most Russians. ++  Russia views Iran as a former empire reaffirming itself as a regional player. ++ Being close neighbors, Russians do not wish to see Iranian nuclear weapons. ++ Russia believes that diplomacy and integrating Iran into the international system is the only way to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons.

I like this comment! What's this?
Russia should learn from history and avoid the mistakes of Great Britain and France right before 2nd World War. In other words, the strategy of integrating Iran into the international system shall not lead to conciliation, the strategy that Great Britain and France followed to face Germany against 2nd World War. Of course, it would be a mistake to isolate Iran because this could lead to paths no one would like to follow. Russia has to encourage a diplomatically approachable Iran, but also make clear that it will not accept the creation of a strong, nuclear, dangerously moving Iran. Russians have to state clearly their support to Iran in order to integrate into the international system, but also state clearly the Iranians have to become more resilient diplomatically and willing to cooperate with them.
