Israel's Air Force Raid on Syria. Its Silence. And What It All Means.

Wall Street Journal columnist Bret Stephens breaks down the intrigue surrounding Israel’s military operations over Syria on September 6. “In a country of open secrets,” Israel’s customary fleet of spokesmen and pundits has remained conspicuously silent, says Stephens. But why? None of the explanations circulating in the news media—the theory that North Korea was using Syria as a safe haven for its nuclear stash, or that Israel had targeted a cache of Iranian weapons meant for Hezbollah—seem to assess current conditions accurately, and Damascus itself has yet to release anything but a vague diplomatic statement. What the public is left with is a battery of questions, a string of unlikely explanations, and blaring silence.

I would add another interesting indicator in addition to the ones mentioned in the article that an "Osirak II" is the "least unlikely possibility": The fact that the international community has refrained from condemning Israel - which is all the more suspicious considering Syria's frustration over this silence. This is interesting, because the international community has been eager and quick to condemn (almost) every Israeli military action (even before the details surfaced).
