Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary General | August 3, 2009
The UN is taking important steps to improve the treaties on which disarmament is based. ++ The NPT must be updated so that the disarmament process will be reliably verified, rooted in legal obligations, and visible to the public. ++ The new CTBT will help ensure that the process enhances security and limits dangers from other weapons. ++ Strategic stability, trust among nations, and the settlement of regional conflicts will also help. ++ Keeping these guidelines in mind, disarmament is possible and worth pursuing.
