Obama's Apologies Undermine US Power

Nile Gardiner, Heritage Foundation | June 3, 2009

Barack Obama should stop apologizing for his country because it's weakening the US and making it more vulnerable to attack. ++ Obama wants to engage enemies through the application of "smart power" but recent missile tests by Iran and North Korea show there's nothing smart in "appeasing rogue states." ++ The US is increasingly "jeered rather than feared" by enemies.  ++ The world needs a president who aggressively projects US power, and who is confident in international affairs, rather than a "Jimmy Carter-like pushover."

Since when is honesty wrong? It takes a stronger, more courageous man to admit when one is wrong than to cower in the shadows and hide with the others who are afraid their mistakes will be found out.
A few years ago I worked as a volunteer at the Carter Center. What I saw was a strong man who was trying to make the difference in the world by using dialogue and he was and is making progress in many areas of the world. We need someone to use reason instead of knee-jerk reactions, so we don't end up in another quagmire like we are in now in Iraq.
Your statement - Iran and North Korea show there's nothing smart in "appeasing rogue states." is quite ambiguous as to what you suggest one should do. Are you suggesting that we should bomb them instead of using dialogue to find a common ground? When you are dealing with people that have nothing to lose - apply force and you will lose. Abe Lincoln once said "Am I not destroying my enemies by making them my friends." Examine the history between Russia and the US - we almost went to nuclear war but look what happened to Russia when Reagan and Gorbachev became started working together instead of bullying each other.
I suspect by your writing that you are not one that would respond to bullying so why would you expect that others would do so?

Please forgive the double posting - saved twice accidentally since I did not allow for the computer to repond. Also I changed the next to the last sentence and did not catch my error. it originally read when Reagan and Gorbachev became allies but I changed it and it should have read this way -
look what happened to Russia when Reagan and Gorbachev started working together instead of bullying each other.
