The Munich Security Conference revealed to Germany the price it will have to pay if it wants to be America’s dear friend: increased troop deployment in Afghanistan and a preparedness to stand by the US if Iran remains uncooperative. ++ But while the US is extending the hand of cooperation to Germany, the latter seems nostalgic for the “era before the fall of the Berlin Wall.” ++ Chancellor Merkel and FM Steinmeier will need to explain to the electorate that “there can be no way back to the era in which Germany was left in peace.”
