Russia and China: A Rising Strategic Partnership

President Medvedev's visit to China has important symbolic significance. ++ Driven by their shared goals of safeguarding and promoting national interests in an era of US dominance, Beijing and Moscow have grown increasingly close in recent years. ++ They formed strategic partnerships on key international issues, such as defense, and established the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. ++ Yet relations must move to a higher plateau and the existing cooperation in defense, trade and energy must be expanded.
