The development of modern western democracies in the last century linked economic growth with political and cultural modernization. ++ Russia and China seem to demonstrate there is a viable authoritarian alternative to democracy and the rule of law in a free market economy. ++ But both countries' economies are ridden by intensifying corruption and deficiencies that could soon be a threat to world peace.
