The EU in the Midst of the Gas War

Marie Jégo, Le Monde (in French) | January 13, 2009

Heavily dependent on Russian gas, the EU has found itself obliged to arbitrate the Russian-Ukranian dispute in order to see its supplies maintained. ++ The difficultly reached agreement under the Czech presidency of the EU, which paves the way for the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe, has, however, failed to find a definitive solution on the gas prices. ++ As a consequence, the deal remains in a precarious state likely to drag the EU into another energy crisis should tensions arise in Moscow or Kiev.
