The internet frenzy of the 21st century and the increase in online social networks was expected to create the “global village.” ++ While people have hundreds of Facebook “friends,” they only keep in touch with 7-10 on average. ++ Network theorists have argued that such large numbers enable “weak links,” which allow for the rapid exchange of information benefiting the user in terms of pointing out available opportunities. ++ However, statistics prove that theory falls short in practice; Facebook has failed to create the global village.
