UN Intervention in Darfur is Imperative

Mia Farrow, Dream for Darfur | May 16, 2008

Next month the US will assume the presidency of the UN Security Council. ++ In hopes of preserving its currently vulnerable legacy as an architect of peace, the US plans to move forward in deploying peacekeeping troops to the Darfur region. ++ As the suffering on the ground intensifies, the Bush administration is hoping for partnerships with other African nations to progress in Sudan. ++ Due to its financial and strategic interests in the region, China is also being urged to play a central role.

I like this comment! What's this?
I would strongly argue against the US being perceived as an architect of peace. That is more of a US idealistic and unrealistic perception of itself. It is extremely difficult to achieve anything in Darfur. Peacekeeping troops tend to be very unhelpful. There are many examples of peacekeeping troops not being able to really achieve anything. There are several reasons for this but overall, peacekeeping troops, while the idea of having them sounds great, they cannot do much at all in a crisis scenario. Often times, they cannot even pride any protection to vulnerable populations.
