US Missile Defense on European Soil Sparks Debate

Plans to build a US-proposed missile-defense shield based in Czech Republic and Poland has been met with feisty opposition. ++ NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Sheffer insists that missile defense is crucial for North Atlantic security in a world threatened by transnational terrorism and rogue states. ++ Public opposition in the Czech Republic represented in the government, Poland’s demands for monetary side payments, and Russia’s fears of security encroachment are proving problematic for its implementation.
