US Must Solve Domestic Issues First

Richard Haass, President, Council on Foreign Relations | July 25, 2011

In a world of diverse threats and diffuse power, the US must turn to a policy of “restoration” to “rebalance the resources devoted to domestic challenges, as opposed to international ones, in favor of the former.” ++ While an active foreign policy should continue to invigorate alliances, the US must be more discriminating in its military interventions abroad. ++ America should allocate more resources to improving its human and physical infrastructure at home, to reinforce the economic foundations of power that allow it to lead by example.

I like this comment! What's this?
Absolutely. Because of the ridiculously high military spending, a lot of other concern of the United States are left in the gutter. Education, Infrastructure and even services that are essentials like medical personnel, teachers and even police are being layed off. Incredible as it may sound, I do agree with Donald Trump that we should be paid for our military assistance for other countries. General Gates in his closing days commented that "US is the only one footing the bill and assistance in NATO". It is unfair that we the United States pay for other country's defense so that they need not pay for it. The long term of the bases in Germany, Okinawa and other countries are quite unnecessary as we do not have an empire to defend (unlike the British Empire in the 19th century). The term US's interest aboard now sounds like a rotten egg when there is lack of funds for even policemen in our own country. I sincerely believe that a country's first and foremost duty is to take care of its own citizens. For that I mean ALL the citizens and not only the rich ones. Of course like others I condemn the GOP for pushing our country to the brink of economic disaster, but ultimately the Democrats and the rest of us (the silent majority) are also responsible for letting them happen.
