War in Afghanistan, Rift in the Bundestag
Jefferson Chase, Deutsche Welle | April 23, 2010
The politics of partisanship have emerged in German parliament over the war in Afghanistan.++ Recent political scandals, such as the death of civilians in the Kunduz affair, have turned the electorate overwhelmingly against the war.++ Parliament is likely to follow suit: “…with the public growing ever more skeptical, old political frontlines could start to reappear.” ++ Merkel may have to work even harder to keep troops in Afghanistan and argue a case that, “…may soon split Germany along traditional party lines.”
