When Hollywood Raises Awareness

Robert Buckley, Rockefeller Foundation | February 24, 2009

“Slumdog Millionaire” won eight Oscars on Sunday night but its greatest success is raising awareness about the poverty and disease which characterize Mumbai slums and kill faster than AIDS. ++ In recent years community projects have managed to control open defecation due to the lack of lavatories and improve sanitation, producing unprecedented social benefits. ++ A better futures lies at the intersection of community cooperation with technical expertise and aid organizations; community groups better understand the needs of the poor.

I like this comment! What's this?
Cinema is one of the most important means through which social awareness can be achieved and recently Hollywood has proved it. But do we really need a movie to remember us of developping countries problems? I can be only skeptical about it: new movie, new theme. Now it seems to me that focussing on Mumbai slums is the up-to-date question to argue about. Anyway it should be kept in mind that beside the success of the movie most people of India are in need and Hollwood's happy ending can't cope with it.
