Why Afghans Need a Vote

Anne Applebaum, Washington Post | August 20, 2009

The Taliban's "don't vote or we''ll blow you up" message aims to make the outcome of today's election in Afghanistan appear illegitimate. ++ This is what the West is fighting against. ++ If not enough people have the courage to participate, the president's right to rule might be put in doubt. ++ For the sake of Afghanistan's future it is of crucial importance that the victor of the elections is accepted by the majority. ++ Thus, nowadays the US and NATO troops should put their major focus on securing the poll stations.
