Improving Common European Defense
Nick Witney, European Council on Foreign Relations | August 1, 2008
The idea of a common European defense policy has hardly made any progress since its inception, but there are some lessons to be learned from the past: spending needs to be sensible and all countries need to pool their resources, even if there are variations in defense culture. ++ Furthermore, a better shared understanding of where European interests and values may require interventions is crucial. ++ In the end, not only Europe's own securtity, but also the health of the transatlantic alliance depend on a stronger European defense policy.
