I'm currently in the process of writing a piece that will compare the realities of immigration in the US and in Germany. I am particularly interested in finding articles that go beyond criticizing Europe and praising the US and that propose solutions for the future. If anyone knows of any particularly relevant literature on this topic and could point me in the correct direction, I would appreciate it!
Thanks,
Crystal

That is an interesting and a very important topic.
The American Institute for Contemporary German Studies had a few essays on this matter:
Muslim Europe and the Transatlantic Divide, by Zachary Shore, 2004. Working Paper.
Does Euroland Have a Culture? An American-European Exchange, edited by Paul Michael Luitzeler, AICGS Humanities Volume 10.
Managing Migration for Economic Growth: Germany and the United States in Comparative Perspective, by Philip Martin, Hans Dietrich von Loeffelholz and Thomas Straubhaar. AICGS Policy Report #1.
Who Is a German? Historical and Modern Perspectives on Africans in Germany, edited by Leroy T. Hopkins, Jr. AICGS Humanities Volume 5.
German Cultures, Foreign Cultures: The Politics of Belonging, edited by Jeffrey Peck. AICGS Humanities Volume 3.
Germany: Reluctant Land of Immigration, by Philip Martin. German Issues #21.
You will find them here in the section “Immigration, Citizenship, and Identity:”
