Anders Fogh Rasmussen

NATO and the Arab Spring

Anders Fogh Rasmussen: The international community has to ensure that the Arab Spring does not turn into a bleak winter. In Libya the question is not if Qadhafi goes, but when. NATO can help North Africa and the Middle East with its democratic transition - complementing support from other international actors, particularly the European Union and the United Nations.

Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen speaks about NATO's support for the Arab Spring in his video blog:

NATO and International Community should not support the status quo in Egypt or Syria , there are efforts to keep different groups or parties out of power in the future which means 'the bleak winter'!!!

Ongoing bombing of Libya needs to be stopped immidiatly to use peaceful means as it's counter productive by all means.

Dear Khalid,

Thank you for your comment. Please elaborate so that I (and others) can better understand your argument.

What peaceful (and effective) means do you suggest?

What "efforts" do you refer to re Egypt and Syria?

As crucial issue of importance all NATO's counties must consider immediate commitment to Operation UP. It is required and should follow in accordance with clear and transparten force generation processs. NATO is loosing becouse of out of tune games played by some of its members. SG NATO should call for special NAC metting with transparent agenda with special topic on thraet which is caused by North Africa belt's countries as well as M-E (Syria) for European countries from Mediterranean. We can compare this situation to US - NATO tropps conditions in Afghanistan, a year ago I've wrote an artice on "Closing the Capabilities Gap":.Shortfalls are a killing factor for NATO - they generate a huge gap between political guidance, planning assumptions, and the capabilities provided by nations....The Alliance suffers primarily from a lack of operational enablers to support combat deployable forces, such as strategic lift, attack and transportation helicopters, interoperability, and multinational logistics. Only the US is capable of providing all of the required operational capabilities. ISAF experience has proved that such circumstances seriously hamper expeditionary operations. Although NATO possesses an excellent planning capacity, the ability of member states to meet agreed targets is critical. Political will is not enough to accomplish assigned missions and tasks...Deep reforms are required to develop a new formula for the operational force generation process because of the steady expansion of NATO's operational roles, both functionally and geographically. The Alliance should seek to move towards a situation where NATO's military transformation and its operational commitments are genuinely symbiotic rather than antagonistic. Again, a holistic approach is required...The linkage between the reform of NATO's operational funding arrangements, force generation, and the progress of the Alliance’s broader military and political transformation goals should be made a central theme of the next Alliance Summit in November 2010. In the long term, a more effective force generation system can only complement the broader reforms in force structure and capability.Alliance members must make an effort to review the 'Comprehensive Political Guidance' (CPG) document, which sets priorities for NATO in regards to capability issues, planning disciplines, and intelligence. The review should focus on the capabilities of achieving CPG goals in the short, middle, and long-term. Such work is already underway, and the mainstreaming of CPG ideas must be continued.
Defense priorities must be made feasible, based on the calculation of political will. This will help to avoid the further generation of capability shortfalls and ultimately reduce the number of casualties on the battlefield."
Nothing new..tell the story again..again..again..again..

The Arabic spring is a successive reactive revolutions from an Arabic country to an another.
At few time, Arabic populations defy the injustice accumulated from many years.
Democracy can be realized but depends on a real understanding of democracy and not just by refusing the worse system in rejecting all peoples who never imagine the freedom in their countries and make the opportunism the only remedy in their lives .
Making a revolution has to model a long term vision for purifying the system and make people ready to support the adventure of freedom because it’s more than necessity for constructing transparency in our Arabic World
