Term Paper: Rise of Resistance, Loss of Legitimacy: Communist Poland

Natalie Catherine Chwalisz: The historic revolution in Poland, now 20 years ago, is a culmination of the regime’s gradual loss of legitimacy. This paper seeks to explain the process of the authoritarian Communist regime’s collapse and stressed role legitimacy plays in sustaining ideological regimes.

In this paper, I apply the concept of legitimacy to analyse the history of Polish communist rule, its gradual degredation and the final outcomes of Poland's bloodless revolutin: Polish history leading to the revolution of 1989 symbolizes a lengthy development process that gradually established the conditions for reform. This process would finally commence the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, and the development of a young democratic system in Poland.
