Iraq: Test For President Obama's Pragmatism

US troops need to withdraw from Iraq, on that the US and Iraq are agreed. ++ The 16-month withdrawal timetable ought, however, to remain modifiable should military experts decide that conditions are likely to deteriorate. ++ In any event, current improvements in Iraq suggest that a quick withdrawal is not as urgent as before. ++ Obama ought therefore to use his much talked about pragmatism to avoid repeating "President Bush's greatest mistakes - allowing ideological and political considerations to trump good military judgment."
