Priorities for India's Policy on China

Medha Bisht, Inst. for Defence Studies and Analyses | January 10, 2012

India must avoid defining its foreign policy in terms of the emerging US narrative of "containing" or "balancing" China. ++ India could gain independent strategic influence in the region particularly vis-a-vis Iran, a major energy partner. ++ Both countries should prioritize cooperation on regional border demarcations as well as the institutionalization of water cooperation. ++ Soft power will play an important role in strengthening India's influence, in particular by increasing its ties with major institutions in the region.
