Secret Talks Divide Taliban
Sami Yousafzai & Ron Moreau, Newsweek | February 13, 2012
Disclosure of the leadership's secret talks in Qatar have divided the Taliban's ranks. ++ The reclusive leader Mullah Omar has not issued a verifiable video or audio statement since late 2001 and the insurgency are waiting for guidance. ++ Peace talks do have support amongst the rear-echelon officials and former fighters. ++ The question of regaining power without fighting rests on whether the Taliban have gained a political vision. ++ There is no guarantee that even a direct order from Omar himself could sustain any agreed ceasefire.
