The Opportunity for Human Rights

Jimmy Carter, frm. US President | December 10, 2008

Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo lost the US its position as champion of human rights. ++ As a result, democracy and rights activists face a global backlash. ++ Obama can close Guantanamo and stop torture by executive order. ++ The US undermined the rule of law in Pakistan with Musharraf, and must now help those who would restore it. ++ Activists in Egypt need help, and the Israel-Palestine conflict needs solving. ++ Pressure on Rwanda and Uganda should stop support for proxy forces in DR Congo. ++ Above all, the US must engage with the UN.
